Over the past decade of travels around Italy I’ve been constantly inspired the culture of small, family-run businesses that focus on craft- whether it be the neighborhood forno al legna or the local merceria specializing in fine undergarments.
The charm is that most of these shops sell products under their own brand, working with a manufacturer to present their unique selection or fabric or detailing. This creates regional styles that help maintain the diverse fabric of such a young country.
I probably visited 50 or so of these stores, from Aosta to Pacino and I found, thanks to a friendly shop owner, a 2nd generation pajama and underwear maker named Mauro who repurposes fine shirting fabrics for boxer shorts.
The functioning buttons are an unnecessary yet charming detail that speaks to the level of craftsmanship, making these a very comfortable vestige of the past.
